Atlanta, GA – In response to the Trump Administration’s decision to once again detain people at the Irwin County Detention Center (ICDC) in Oscilla, Georgia, the National Immigration Project released the following statement:

The decision to reopen ICDC, a facility with a track record rife with systemic abuse and medical violence against immigrant women, is a profound betrayal of the survivors who bravely spoke out about the abuse they endured in the facility and all those who survived the abusive conditions there.

The Oldaker v. Giles class action lawsuit documented the stories of dozens of women who were subjected to nonconsensual and medically unnecessary gynecological procedures, denied language access, and retaliated against for speaking out. Their accounts led to multiple investigations, including a 2023 U.S. Senate report that confirmed serious violations of civil and human rights at ICDC, and ultimately, to the overdue shutdown of the facility in 2021.

Reactivating ICE’s contract with ICDC is a direct affront to the courageous women who came forward at great personal risk to expose the truth. To now reopen ICDC as an immigration detention facility is indefensible. We call for an end to this administration’s continued effort to expand detention capacity, an end to detention at ICDC, and justice for all those who are victimized and traumatized by this country’s abusive immigration enforcement and detention system.
