In response to the fatal shooting of a community member by federal immigration agents in Minneapolis yesterday, Sirine Shebaya, Executive Director of the National Immigration Project, issued the following statement:

We are grieving and outraged that Renee Nicole Macklin Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, wife, and poet, was shot and killed by ICE in Minneapolis on Wednesday. The killing is not an isolated incident; it is the predictable outcome of ICE’s tactics, particularly militarized operations carried out in residential communities. Under this administration, we have seen an alarming increase in reported shootings and use of force against immigrants and civilians, emphasizing the point that we are all less safe with ICE in our neighborhoods.

We are also deeply disturbed by the federal government’s narrative of events, which are glaringly contradicted by eyewitness accounts and video. These contradictions raise serious questions that demand full transparency, an independent investigation, and real accountability. Anything less would be a profound injustice to Macklin Good, her loved ones, and the broader community now living with dread and despair.

The National Immigration Project stands in grief and solidarity with the Minneapolis community and local immigrant-focused organizations. Minneapolis has long been a city shaped and made vibrant by immigrants and refugees. Beyond the immediate loss of life, this violence is another attempt to intimidate and terrorize immigrant communities. The tragic death of Macklin Good inflicts deep psychological harm on families and neighbors who must now process fear, sorrow, and uncertainty in the place they call home.

We call on federal authorities to immediately suspend ICE operations everywhere; we call on Congress to stop funding ICE; and we call for an independent, transparent investigation into this killing with all available information released to the public.

Our thoughts are with Renee Nicole Macklin Good’s family and loved ones. We remain committed to building a future where belonging, not fear, defines our communities.
