Washington, DC – Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed the shameful Senate budget reconciliation bill, handing over an additional $70 billion dollars to ICE and CBP. This new funding includes a $350 million fund specifically for operations targeting cities that don’t cooperate with immigration enforcement and comes shortly on the heels of last year’s OBBBA–a bill that already gifted DHS  $170 billion to use over the next four years.

In response, Sirine Shebaya, Executive Director of the National Immigration Project, issued the following statement:

“Last year’s funding bill made disastrous cuts to health care and food assistance while supercharging DHS, and, predictably, people are suffering. It is shocking that in this moment, when families across the country are struggling with staggering prices for basic necessities, Congress doubled down on this choice, funneling even more money to ICE. This bill is truly ‘ICE First, Families Last.’

We already know what the result of this largesse will be: more separated families, more violence, and more deaths. It is appalling that Congress saw what happened in Los Angeles, Chicago, and Minneapolis, among other cities and decided to greenlight more of the same.

In the face of this egregious expansion of immigration enforcement, the National Immigration Project will continue to support communities impacted by detention and deportation in every way we can. We will continue working side by side with our members across all 50 states to challenge these unlawful practices and ensure that our immigrant communities have the tools and support they need to resist these attacks on their constitutional rights.”
