Washington, DC – The National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild Executive Director, Sirine Shebaya, issued the following statement:

“We join the nearly 800,000 DACA recipients and their families in celebrating today. But we also recognize that DACA is an inherently temporary solution, and that it leaves out so many members of our communities.”

“Today the Supreme Court ruled that the Trump Administration’s termination of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was unlawful, granting hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients a temporary but critical reprieve.

This decision is a testament to years of organizing and advocacy led by immigrant youth and their family members, whose bold determination and relentless spirit energized our movement for immigrant justice and human rights.

We join the nearly 800,000 DACA recipients and their families in celebrating today. But we also recognize that DACA is an inherently temporary solution, and that it leaves out so many members of our communities. We need solutions that ensure that all immigrants are able to live with certainty and security about their futures.

Even as we celebrate today’s victory, we recommit to fighting racism and oppression wherever they manifest, in our immigration and criminal policing systems alike.

On this Juneteenth eve, we recognize that our fights and our fates are inextricably linked. We will keep striving to actualize our vision of a world free from systemic racism and injustice.”
