A Letter from Carlos Moctezuma García, Chair of the Board
August 9, 2019
Dear members, colleagues, supporters, and friends,
I am excited to announce that Sirine Shebaya will serve as the next Executive Director of the National Immigration Project of the National Lawyers Guild. After an exhaustive nationwide search and careful review of talented candidates, the Board of Directors chose Sirine to lead the NIPNLG. I’m also excited to announce that I have stepped in as the new Chair of the Board of Directors.
“Sirine was one of the first lawyers to head down to South Texas during the height of the government’s family separation attack on our community…”
Sirine takes the helm in September and brings a wealth of experience to the organization. You can read more about her bio in the press release, but what stands out to me is Sirine’s commitment to advancing civil and immigrant rights in the courtroom and on the streets. Although many of us know about Sirine’s work during the Muslim Ban cases, others may not know that Sirine was one of the first lawyers to head down to South Texas during the height of the government’s family separation attack on our community. I know because I was there and talked to her as she stood outside of the Port Isabel Detention Center. This was a time when those of us on the ground were tired, taxed, and running on fumes. So it’s an understatement when I say that I’m excited to work with Sirine. In addition, Sirine is uniquely qualified for this position, having recently served on NIPNLG’s Board of Directors.
Sirine will be working closely with NIPNLG’s wide range of stakeholders and constituents on the important planning and program work that lies ahead.
As the organization welcomes new leadership and redoubles its efforts to advance the rights of immigrants, we look forward to working with you this Fall and to seeing many of you in Durham.
